The National Interagency Fire Center's September 17 national weather briefing highlighted a weather system affecting the Pacific Northwest that brings a dual threat: isolated to scattered thunderstorms over southwest Oregon, far northern California, and separately over eastern Oregon and central Idaho, along with the potential for gusty, drying winds on the eastern flanks of the Cascades.

This type of pattern โ€” convective precipitation accompanied by gusty outflow winds and low humidity โ€” is a classic late-season ignition setup in the Pacific Northwest interior. Even when thunderstorms produce measurable rainfall, lightning can ignite new fires in areas that have not yet received significant precipitation, particularly at higher elevations where fuels remain critically dry after a long, hot summer.

Fuel Conditions Remain Elevated

After months of heat and minimal summer precipitation across much of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, fuel moisture levels in dead fuels โ€” grasses, shrubs, and down woody debris โ€” remain well below historical averages for mid-September across the inland Pacific Northwest. Live fuel moisture in shrub communities is also lower than normal in many areas, particularly in the shrub-steppe zones of eastern Oregon and southern Idaho.

The NIFC's September 1 Predictive Services Outlook noted that the Pacific Northwest fire season saw substantial fire expansion driven by a Red Flag Warning event east of the Cascades, and that overall ignition numbers have remained elevated, though the pace of new large fire starts has moderated somewhat from the August peak.

What the Rest of September Could Bring

Historically, the Pacific Northwest sees its first widespread precipitation events of fall in late September or October, which significantly reduces fire risk. However, the period between now and those first fall rains remains vulnerable to:

  • Lightning-caused ignitions from convective storms, particularly at elevation
  • Wind events that can rapidly spread existing fires or new ignitions
  • Low relative humidity during afternoon hours, especially east of the Cascades

Fire agencies are urging the public to continue following all burn bans currently in effect across the region. While some counties have begun relaxing burn restrictions as conditions moderate, residents should check with their local county or state forestry office before conducting any outdoor burning.

Burn Bans and Restrictions

Burn bans remain in effect across many Oregon and Washington counties. Governor Kotek's state of emergency declaration for wildfire, issued earlier this season and in effect through December 31, 2026, provides the legal framework for maintaining restrictions as long as conditions warrant. Residents should check ODF's Industrial Fire Precaution Level map (oregon.gov/ODF) and Washington DNR's burn ban information at dnr.wa.gov before conducting any outdoor burning activities.
