Off-the-Charts Readings in Central Washington

The most extreme air quality readings in the region — and among the worst anywhere in the United States this week — were recorded in north-central Washington. Monitoring stations in Wenatchee and Leavenworth reached Air Quality Index (AQI) values approaching and exceeding 1,500. The standard AQI scale tops out at 500, which is already classified as "Hazardous." These off-scale readings reflect smoke concentrations that are genuinely dangerous even for short-term outdoor exposure.

Portland Among Worst Cities Globally

Portland, Oregon ranked among the worst air quality readings for any major city in the world this week, according to global air quality tracking platforms. A monitoring station in Post, Oregon — approximately 20 miles southeast of Portland — registered an AQI of 460, in the Hazardous category. Thick smoke blanketed downtown Portland, reducing visibility and sending residents indoors.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued air quality advisories covering most of the state, with the Willamette Valley receiving its first significant wildfire smoke event of the 2026 season. Schools in multiple districts canceled outdoor activities, and several air quality alerts were extended into the weekend.

Spokane and Eastern Washington

In Spokane, AQI levels reached 210 — in the Very Unhealthy range — earlier in the week, compounding the misery of a community already grappling with active fires and mass evacuations. Air quality advisories have been in effect continuously for eastern Washington communities.

Smoke Reaches California and Beyond

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District extended an air quality advisory through August 6 due to smoke drifting south from Pacific Northwest fires — a vivid illustration of how regional wildfire smoke doesn't respect state lines. Similar advisories were issued in parts of Nevada and Utah.
