Residents across the Pacific Northwest are breathing some of the worst air in the world this week as wildfire smoke from approximately 50 active large fires blankets the region from the Cascades to the coast. Portland, Oregon, has emerged as one of the most severely impacted urban centers, ranking among the top 10 most polluted cities globally as of August 5, according to air quality monitoring firm IQAir.
Portland: Hazardous Conditions
Portland's downtown air quality index (AQI) soared into the "very unhealthy" and "hazardous" ranges this week, driven by a combination of record wildfire activity upwind, a shift in wind direction that funneled smoke westward through the Columbia River Gorge, and a heat-induced atmospheric inversion that trapped smoke close to the ground.
A monitoring station in Post, Oregon โ approximately 20 miles southeast of the Rowe Creek Complex โ recorded a "hazardous" reading of 460 AQI on August 4, according to OPB. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued an air quality advisory covering the Portland metro area (Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties), as well as Baker, Crook, Deschutes, Harney, Jefferson, northern Klamath, northern Lake, Malheur, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, and southern Wasco counties.
Columbia River Gorge as a Smoke Pipeline
The Columbia River Gorge is functioning as a natural smoke conduit, channeling dense smoke from eastern Oregon and Washington fire zones into the Portland metro area and western Washington. Locally gusty east winds of up to 30 mph in the gorge during morning hours are pushing smoke westward before winds relax in the afternoon.
Communities in Wenatchee and Leavenworth, directly in the path of the easterly flow corridor, recorded readings well beyond the hazardous AQI threshold during afternoon hours this week. Monitoring stations in North Bend and Fall City, east of Seattle along U.S. Route 2, logged AQI values approaching 200 โ the border of "very unhealthy" โ as dense smoke spread westward across the Puget Sound basin.
Seattle Advisory Expanding
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency forecast Seattle's AQI reaching 137 by early this week, placing the city in the "unhealthy" category. This marks the first significant smoke push of the 2026 fire season for the greater Seattle area. Cascade foothill communities are experiencing notably worse conditions than the urban core due to their proximity to active fire corridors.
Boise and Southern Idaho
Boise and surrounding communities in the Treasure Valley are also operating under air quality advisories as smoke from the Tartar Fire, the Big Grass Fire, and other active Idaho and Oregon fires circulates through the Snake River Plain. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality recommends that residents limit outdoor exertion and keep windows closed.
Health Guidance for Smoke-Affected Residents
- Limit outdoor activity when AQI exceeds 100 ("unhealthy for sensitive groups"). Avoid strenuous exercise entirely when AQI is above 150.
- Stay indoors with windows and doors closed. Use air conditioning on recirculate mode if available.
- Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce indoor particle concentrations.
- Wear N95 or KN95 respirators if you must be outdoors for extended periods. Cloth masks and surgical masks do not filter fine particulate matter effectively.
