What Is Causing the Danger
The primary threat Wednesday is from dry thunderstorms โ convective cells that produce lightning and gusty surface winds but deliver little to no effective rainfall. Moisture aloft is sufficient to generate lightning, but the column of air between the cloud base and the ground is so hot and dry that precipitation evaporates before reaching the surface. This type of lightning-without-rain weather pattern is one of the most efficient wildfire ignition mechanisms in the Pacific Northwest.
Relative humidity in the affected areas is forecast to drop to 10โ15% during afternoon hours, with temperatures reaching into the mid-90s to low 100sยฐF. Gusty outflow winds beneath thunderstorm cells can gust to 30โ40 mph locally, causing rapid fire spread and firefighter safety concerns on active incidents.
Fuel Conditions: A Month Ahead of Schedule
The National Interagency Fire Center's Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory for the Pacific Northwest notes that live and dead fuel moisture levels are tracking approximately one month ahead of their historical norms. For the northern Cascades, Northern Rockies, and Great Plains corridor, hot, dry conditions are expected to persist through the end of the week and into the weekend.
