The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) Monday morning situation report confirms that 99 large fires are currently burning across the United States, with 18 new large incidents reported in the past 24 hours. Cumulatively, 45,835 fires have burned more than 5.2 million acres across the country in 2026 to date โ well above the 10-year-to-date averages of approximately 34,340 fires and 3.63 million acres.
Pacific Northwest Summary
The Pacific Northwest remains the most active fire region in the country, with Oregon alone accounting for 30 of the nation's large active fires. More than 1.9 million acres have burned across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana this season, driven by a summer characterized by persistent heat, drought, low fuel moisture, and multiple wind events.
Key large fires currently tracked by NIFC in the Northwest include:
- Rowe Creek Complex (Wheeler County, OR): 313,439 acres, 55% contained. Lightning-caused, started July 15. Southwest Complex IMT 2 assigned.
- Old Trails Fire (Spokane County, WA): 3,500+ acres, 0% contained. Three large fires burning in and around Spokane; 640+ structures destroyed.

National Context
The 2026 season is now the most active wildfire season at this point in the year since 2022 in terms of both total fires and acres burned. Initial attack activity nationwide on Sunday was moderate, with 257 new fires reported. The high rate of new starts, combined with ongoing large fire activity, is maintaining pressure on national firefighting resources.
Forecast
The NIFC national fire weather forecast notes that despite cooler-than-normal temperatures in the wake of the cold front, elevated fire conditions will linger in the Inland Northwest โ particularly southeast Oregon โ through the early part of the week. The next significant weather system with potential for meaningful rainfall is not currently in the forecast for the near term.
