Guard and Reserve Hercules Fire Surge 2026
According to reporting in Aerial Fire Magazine, National Guard and Reserve C-130 Hercules airframes have provided indispensable surge suppression capacity throughout the 2026 season, dropping hundreds of thousands of gallons of fire retardant to reinforce ground containment lines from California to Washington. The aircraft, modified with the Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS), have been particularly effective at delivering large retardant loads in mountainous terrain where conventional airtanker operations are constrained.
The Guard and Reserve deployments represent a federal emergency response mechanism that supplements the contracted large air tanker (LAT) fleet managed through the U.S. Forest Service and the National Interagency Aviation Coordination Center (NIACC). When civilian airtanker availability is maxed out โ as it has been through much of this summer at National Preparedness Level 5 โ MAFFS-equipped military aircraft fill critical gaps.

During periods of extreme national demand, local and regional managers accept that some of their resource requests cannot be filled from national contract aircraft, making the MAFFS military augmentation even more critical.
Ground Resources: Hotshots, Crews, and Engines
Beyond aerial support, the 2026 season has pushed the 109 Interagency Hotshot Crews (IHC) and hundreds of Type 1 and Type 2 hand crews to their operational limits. Crews have been working back-to-back assignments across multiple geographic areas throughout the summer with little rotation time.

Fire managers across the region have raised concerns about firefighter fatigue and the cumulative physical and mental health toll of an extended PL5 season. With 48 consecutive days at maximum national preparedness before Thursday's step-down, many personnel have been working in fire environments continuously since mid-July.
Agency administrators have been urged to prioritize crew rest, enforce work/rest guidelines, and identify opportunities for personnel who have been continuously deployed to rotate home โ even as operational demands remain high on 77 active large fires.

The improving weather across the Pacific Northwest offers a partial respite for resource-stressed agencies. Some Incident Management Teams and crew resources are expected to be released from Pacific Northwest incidents over the coming days, providing personnel a chance to rest and refit before potential redeployment if conditions deteriorate in September or if fire activity in the Great Basin or Southern Plains increases.
