The Little Giant Fire, burning in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest approximately 22 miles northwest of Leavenworth, Washington, has grown to nearly 60,000 acres and remains at zero percent containment as of August 5, 2026. The fire, which sparked several weeks ago in Chelan County, exploded in size over the weekend of August 1-3 after wind-driven runs added nearly 13,000 acres in a single day, pushing the total from roughly 38,500 acres to more than 51,000 by Monday morning before continuing to grow through the week.

Fire Behavior and Terrain

The Little Giant Fire is being driven by steep, rugged terrain and extremely dry fuels in the heart of the North Cascades. Fire behavior has been characterized as extreme, with backing, flanking, and uphill runs making direct attack largely impossible in much of the fire's footprint. Spot fires have created additional complications for crews attempting to establish and hold containment lines.

On Sunday, August 3, significant fire activity was observed along the south shore of Lake Chelan, east of Grouse Mountain and northwest of Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park. Crews attempted to access at least one spot fire across Lake Chelan via boat to apply direct suppression tactics. Structure preparation work is ongoing in threatened areas surrounding the fire.

Communities at Risk

The fire is managed by a Complex Incident Management Team (CA Team 2) and has resulted in numerous evacuation orders, area closures, and road closures across the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Hundreds of structures are considered threatened. Local communities near Lake Chelan have been placed on high alert, and residents are advised to remain prepared to evacuate on short notice.

Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue has been hosting community meetings livestreamed on their Facebook page to keep area residents informed as conditions change rapidly.

Outlook

With zero percent containment and explosive fire behavior expected to continue under hot, dry, and windy conditions, the Little Giant Fire remains one of Washington's most pressing firefighting challenges. NIFC listed the fire among the nation's top priority incidents. Aerial resources, ground crews, and heavy equipment are all engaged, but the combination of remote terrain and extreme weather has made progress slow.
