As of this week, red flag conditions continue to affect portions of eastern Oregon and western Washington, and a thunderstorm threat over the coming days is raising concerns about outflow winds and new ignitions.
PDS Red Flag: A First in Washington History
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a rare Extremely Critical Risk in its Day 1 Fire Weather Outlook on August 1, encompassing the majority of Eastern Washington. That same day, the National Weather Service issued the first Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning ever recorded in Washington State, signifying fire weather conditions of historic severity.
PDS designations are reserved for situations where wind, low relative humidity, and dry fuels combine to create near-certain catastrophic fire behavior with any ignition. On August 1, those conditions were met: gusts of 40 to 50 mph swept across Eastern Washington as a dry cold front pushed through, relative humidity dropped to single digits, and fuels were critically dry after months of drought.
Current Threats: Red Flags and Thunderstorms
Red flag warnings remain in effect for portions of eastern Oregon and Washington as of this weekend, with gusty winds persisting as a recurring concern. However, fire managers are now equally focused on an emerging thunderstorm threat. NIFC's August 15 weather briefing flagged a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms affecting extreme southeastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and the southern half of Idaho through the near-term forecast period.
The danger lies not in the precipitation โ dry thunderstorms often produce little or no measurable rainfall โ but in their outflow winds. A convective storm cell can generate outflow winds exceeding 40 mph with little warning, capable of rapidly reversing fire direction and spreading spot fires well ahead of established containment lines. The Hagen Fire and other large fires in the region are under active thunderstorm watches for exactly this reason.
Monthly Outlook: No Relief in Sight
The National Interagency Fire Center's August significant fire potential forecast, issued August 1, projects above-normal fire potential across most of the northwestern United States through the end of the month. The above-normal zone extends from central Utah, northwest Colorado, western Wyoming, and northwest Montana westward to the Pacific coast, encompassing all of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
Boise State Public Radio reported that the latest wildfire potential forecast shows all three states at above-average risk for significant wildfire activity through September โ meaning the end of the peak season remains weeks away at minimum.
Current Conditions: What Makes This Season Different
This season's extreme fire weather can be attributed to a convergence of several factors:
- Record low snowpack: Below-average snowpack in mountain ranges accelerated spring snowmelt, leading to early-season fuel drying.
- Statewide drought: Washington's Department of Ecology declared a statewide drought emergency in April; Oregon and Idaho reported similar conditions.
