A dramatic split in fire weather is defining the final days of June 2026 across the western United States. While the Four Corners region bakes under extraordinarily dangerous conditions, the Pacific Northwest is experiencing a temporary โ and welcome โ reprieve from fire weather stress.
Extreme Conditions in the Southwest
The southern Intermountain West is enduring what meteorologists are calling historically rare fire weather for late June. An unusually strong early-summer trough carved out of the Pacific Northwest into the Great Basin, creating a steep pressure gradient that is driving:
- Southwesterly wind gusts of 30 to 60 mph, locally stronger in downslope terrain
- Relative humidity as low as 5 to 15 percent

The National Interagency Fire Center described the conditions as "extraordinarily rare for late June" with impacts expected to be severe. These conditions directly contributed to the fatal burnover that killed three Rifle Helitack firefighters on June 27 while they battled the Knowles Fire near the Colorado-Utah border.
Elevated to critical fire weather also persists across Nevada, southern California deserts, the greater Four Corners region, and far southern Wyoming. Flash flooding is possible in the Tennessee Valley as moisture from the Southeast interacts with an active frontal boundary.
Pacific Northwest: A Temporary Window
The same trough that is driving extreme conditions in the Southwest is delivering beneficial moisture to the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. Well below-average temperatures for late June are the rule across Oregon, Washington, and northern Idaho, with:
- Widespread rain showers and embedded thunderstorms
- Mountain snow in portions of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming
- Elevated humidity levels moderating cured fuel conditions
This pattern allowed crews working the Shingle Creek Fire near Riggins to make major progress last week, and it has kept new fire ignitions in the PNW to a minimum during a period of national resource stress.
Looking Ahead: July Risk
The reprieve is not expected to last. Long-range forecasts indicate the Pacific Northwest will transition toward a more typical โ and more dangerous โ July fire weather pattern within the next one to two weeks. Above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation are anticipated for much of eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Idaho in July.
Fuel moisture levels across the PNW, while somewhat elevated by recent rains, remain below the five-year average for the date in many areas. Once conditions dry out, the region's landscapes will be primed for rapid fire spread.
