The extreme fire activity now unfolding across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho is not happening by chance โ it is the product of a convergence of long-term drought, record-low winter snowpack, and El Nino-influenced summer heat that fire scientists and managers have been warning about for months.
Washington's Fourth Consecutive Drought Emergency
Washington State is experiencing its fourth drought emergency in a row, a streak that has significantly depleted soil moisture, reduced stream flows, and stressed vegetation across the state. Eastern Washington, already the driest part of the state, is now in moderate to severe drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, while much of Western Washington is categorized as abnormally dry.
The Columbia Basin and surrounding dryland farming regions โ historically some of the most fire-prone landscapes in the Northwest โ are exhibiting vegetation moisture levels typical of late August rather than mid-July.
Snowpack at 50 Percent of Normal
Winter snowpack across much of the Pacific Northwest came in at approximately 50% of normal for the 2025โ26 water year. In practical terms, this means the mountains contained far less stored water than average โ water that would normally release slowly through the spring and early summer, keeping stream flows up and vegetation green well into July.
With that buffer absent, fuels across the region cured much earlier than normal. NIFC's Predictive Services advisory specifically notes that current live and dead fuel conditions are "more typical of mid-August," meaning the fire season is running three to four weeks ahead of schedule in terms of fuel readiness to burn.
El Nino Strengthening
Climate scientists note that a strengthening El Nino pattern is further amplifying the heat and dryness across the West. El Nino years historically correlate with above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation across the Pacific Northwest during summer months. This summer's temperature pattern has been consistent with that projection, with multiple heat events already recorded across the region.
What Fire Managers Are Watching
Predictive Services forecasters have issued a Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory for the Pacific Northwest, noting several key factors that will drive fire behavior in the coming weeks:
- Dry and dead fuels well below typical moisture thresholds for mid-July
- Ongoing dry and hot weather pattern expected to persist through at least the next two weeks
- Potential for additional dry lightning events as upper-level disturbances move through the region
- Increased resistance to control and longer active burn periods on all new ignitions
