Dangerous fire weather conditions are persisting across the Pacific Northwest, with National Weather Service Red Flag Warnings in effect across large portions of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho as hot temperatures, critically low relative humidity, and gusty winds combine to create extreme fire spread potential.

Red Flag Warnings, issued when a combination of weather factors creates conditions conducive to extreme fire behavior and rapid spread, remain in effect for:

  • Central and eastern Oregon, including the Columbia Basin, high desert, and east Cascade foothills
  • Northeast Washington and the Columbia Basin area, where west winds of 10โ€“20 mph with gusts of 20โ€“30 mph are developing

The National Weather Service and fire weather forecasters cite a combination of factors:

  • Heat: Temperatures reached 90ยฐF and above across central and eastern Oregon and Washington last weekend, desiccating fine fuels โ€” grasses, brush, and fallen needles โ€” that now carry fire with alarming speed
  • Critically low humidity: Relative humidity has dropped to single digits in parts of Nevada, southwestern Idaho, and eastern Oregon, leaving fuels so dry that fires spread at rates that outpace suppression efforts
  • Wind: Gusts exceeding 30 mph have been recorded across the Columbia Basin and through Cascade gaps, creating spotting conditions where burning embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire front
  • Lightning: Severe thunderstorms in mid-July produced thousands of dry lightning strikes, sparking dozens of new fire starts simultaneously and overwhelming initial attack resources

Fuel Conditions

Fuel moisture readings across central and eastern Oregon and eastern Washington are at or near critically low levels typical of late August, weeks ahead of the historical norm. Rangeland grasses have cured early across the high desert due to a dry spring and persistent summer heat. Forest fuels on east-side ponderosa pine and mixed conifer zones are similarly stressed after multiple years of below-average precipitation.

Fire behavior analysts note that current fuel conditions are contributing to extreme and erratic fire behavior, including rapid rates of spread, deep burning, and significant spotting ahead of fire fronts โ€” all of which complicate suppression efforts and increase life safety risks.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Temperatures are expected to moderate slightly this week in the northern half of the West, but weather models do not show significant, sustained relief in the form of widespread wetting rainfall. Isolated thunderstorms are possible in the Cascades and higher terrain, but these have the potential to produce more dry lightning starts rather than meaningful precipitation.

Fire weather conditions are expected to remain elevated through at least the coming week. The National Predictive Services Outlook through seven days shows continued above-normal fire potential across the Pacific Northwest. Residents should avoid any activities that could ignite a fire โ€” including outdoor burning, fireworks, campfires in restricted areas, and parking vehicles on dry grass. Any new ignition under current conditions has the potential to spread rapidly and threaten lives and property.
