A fast-moving wildfire ignited Monday afternoon, July 6, 2026, in the Boise Foothills near Claremont Drive in Ada County, Idaho โ€” and by Tuesday evening had burned an estimated 4,420 acres with no containment reported. The Claremont Fire is straining local and regional firefighting resources and has prompted evacuation orders in parts of Boise County, while forcing closure of the popular Ridge to Rivers Trail System.

Fire Origin and Spread

Boise Fire Department responded to initial reports of the Claremont Fire at approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 6. Driven by hot, dry conditions and seasonal winds, the grass fire spread rapidly north and northeast โ€” away from the most densely populated residential areas, according to Boise Fire officials. However, the fire remained active overnight and continued growing. By Tuesday evening, WildCAD data confirmed the fire had reached 4,420 acres. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Great Basin office is among the agencies involved in suppression efforts.

Evacuations

Boise County officials issued Level 2 "Be Set" evacuation orders for portions of the county as the fire extended beyond the Ada County boundary. Residents in affected areas are urged to prepare to leave immediately and monitor the Ada County Emergency Management and Boise County Sheriff channels for updated zone information.

Trail and Recreation Closures

The Boise Fire Department asked the public to leave the Ridge to Rivers Trail System โ€” one of the most heavily used recreation networks in the Treasure Valley โ€” as the fire threatened the area. A Bureau of Land Management closure is also in effect and is anticipated to remain through July 11, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. The closure does not affect private land.

Air Quality Impacts

Smoke from the Claremont Fire has been visible throughout the Treasure Valley. Residents with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children should limit outdoor exposure and keep windows closed. Air quality monitors should be checked frequently at AirNow.gov for the most current readings in the Boise area.

Ongoing Response

Firefighters are working to establish defensible lines on the southwest perimeter and contain forward spread. No timeline for containment has been provided. This incident is the latest in a string of foothills fires that officials say underscore the extreme conditions gripping southern Idaho early in the 2026 fire season. NIFC reports Idaho currently has three large active fires, making it one of the busier states in the country this week.
