The National Weather Service is forecasting continued hot and dry conditions through the July 4th weekend and beyond for the inland Pacific Northwest. The combination of temperatures in the 90sโ100sยฐF, relative humidity dropping to single digits in the afternoon, and occasional gusty outflow winds from nearby thunderstorm activity creates what meteorologists call "critical fire weather" โ conditions under which any ignition has the potential to spread rapidly.
Red Flag Warnings are issued when the combination of low relative humidity (typically below 15%), high temperatures, and sustained winds above 15 mph are forecast simultaneously. What This Means for the July 4th Weekend
The holiday weekend presents a historically elevated human-caused ignition risk. Fireworks, campfires, and unattended equipment can all start fires under current conditions. - Obey all posted fire restrictions on federal, state, and local lands

The region typically sees its most destructive fires in August, when vegetation moisture reaches its annual low and the influence of dry, offshore flow โ known colloquially as the "East Wind" event in Oregon and Washington โ can bring dangerous wind events.
